Acne Frequently Asked Questions
Acne occurs when pores become blocked with oil, acne bacteria, and dead skin cells. Certain prescription medications can cause acne breakouts and may worsen a pre-existing acne skin condition. Genetics may cause some individuals to be more susceptible to acne.
If you have acne, it can be made worse by:
stress
- a poor diet
- being overweight
- not exercising enough
- being pregnant
- having polycystic ovarian syndrome
NON INFLAMMATORY
Whiteheads and blackheads are types of noninflammatory acne lesion. They are the least severe forms of acne. Noninflammatory blemishes usually do not cause swelling and are not very painful.
INLAMMATORY
Inflammatory acne blemishes include:
- papules
- pustules
- nodules
- cysts
Inflammatory acne is more severe than noninflammatory acne, and this type is more likely to cause complications, such as scarring or pitting.
Blemishes or lesions that are inflamed, or red, swollen, and warm to the touch can result from inflammatory acne.
CYSTIC ACNE
Cystic acne is the most serious type of acne. It develops when cysts form deep underneath your skin. This can result from a combination of bacteria, oil, and dry skin cells that get trapped in your pores.
You cannot treat moderate-to-severe inflammatory blemishes at home. These lesions require care from a doctor, skin therapist or dermatologist.
Treatments include:
- antibiotics
- topical corticosteroids
- oral contraceptives for hormonal-related acne
- systematic retinoids
- steroid injections
- chemical peels
- photodynamic therapy to combat bacteria
- drainage and extraction to remove large cysts
Yes Acne can cause poor self-image, low self-esteem, lack of confidence, anxiety and depression. It seems the worse the acne, the worse the consequences. Effective treatment of acne can turn this around and reduce emotional and psychological symptoms.
The primary trigger of most cases of acne is the fluctuation of hormones. Hormones stimulate the oil glands to produce more sebum, which can block pores. Bacteria can then grow within the pores, causing them to become inflamed and break out.
Wash Your Face Daily
- Cleansing and treating your skin twice a day is the best way to keep breakouts away.
Don’t over exfoliate
- Exfoliating a pimple can pull away healthy skin cells and create an open wound and higher risk for scarring.
Cleanse and Moisturise
- If your skin tends to be oily, choose products with salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or glycolic acid. For sensitive skin, look for cleansers with lactic acid or hydrating ingredients like glycerin, which aren’t as drying as those made for oilier types. Moisturising hydrates the skin surface and can re-balance oil glands and help control acne and improve healing.
Use sunscreen that won’t block pores
- While SPF is a must, some sunscreens can trigger breakouts. You want to look for oil-free and non-comedogenic formulas that won’t clog pores.
Don’t wear makeup to the gym
- Sweat is released through visible pores in the skin,” says dermatologist Dr. Janelle Vega. “When makeup covers those pores, that barrier doesn’t allow the sweat to make it to the surface of the skin, which can lead to clogged pores. The trapped debris and bacteria are a perfect breeding ground for acne.
